Objectives

Roman Catholicism is as small in its origins as a score of Israelites and their leader and as vast today as one billion members scattered across the globe, joined together by a set of shared beliefs and practices. It has been the dominant cultural force in Europe for more than a thousand years, the source of intellectual and creative explosions as well as repressions of thought and expression.

As the foundational and sustaining spirit of Loyola University Chicago, Roman Catholicism cannot adequately be studied through the lens of any one academic discipline, any one ideological orientation. The Catholic Studies Undergraduate minor, therefore, is multidisciplinary. The program’s faculty reflect diverse academic specialties and beliefs, and it seeks to enroll students from different faith traditions. Courses are drawn from the social and physical sciences, history, literature, philosophy, and theology.

Requirements for the Minor

The minor consists of 18 semester hours (six courses) from the list below. No more than two courses from a single academic discipline may be applied toward the minor. Also, students may take no more than four courses pertaining to the historical period before 1500 A.D. Students will confer with the program director to determine their courses and sequences of courses.

All minors must attend a regular capstone event. Each graduating senior will be responsible for a presentation expressive of the integration of knowledge he/she has achieved in the program. Each candidate will submit a paper of reflection that speaks to his/her experience.
