Spring 2007
Greetings from the Dean
Dear Alumni,
Welcome to the spring edition of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) alumni newsletter. Through this publication, I invite you to share in the good news and deeds of your alma mater's current students, faculty, and staff.
I am pleased to report that CAS was full of activity in the fall. This past semester, we not only welcomed more than 30 distinguished full-time faculty members to our CAS community, but also saw many of our veteran scholars gain much-deserved recognition for their teaching and research. Please see the "Department and Faculty News" section of this publication to learn about awards won by Drs. Timothy Gilfoyle, Kenneth Johnson, and William Yost. Moreover, CAS is in the process of recruiting close to 30 additional full-time faculty members to join our community in academic year 2007-2008, including an endowed Regent's Chair in Normative/Social Ethics in the Department of Philosophy. We look forward to introducing our new scholars to you in the coming months.
I am also happy to report that we saw a record number of new students on campus this fall: 2,134 freshmen and 736 transfer students. In CAS, we were pleased to see that these incoming students showed great interest in many of our new academic programs, including Advertising/Public Relations, Forensic Science, Journalism, and Islamic World Studies.
I encourage you to remain connected to your alma mater, and hope you will participate in some of the stimulating events and programs on campus this spring. I extend my best wishes to you for success in 2007, and as always, I thank you for your continued support of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Sincerely,
Isiaah Crawford, PhD
