Department Updates
Advertising and Public Relations
In October, the Department of Communication hosted a group of advertising executives and their translators from Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic. This group of executives was eager to learn about ethics in American advertising, and how advertising and ethics are taught at Loyola.
Asian Studies
The Asian Studies program hosted the Annual Meeting of the U.S.-China Peoples Friendship Association (Chicago Chapter) on Dec. 2, 2006. Among the guests was Consul General, Chinese Consulate Chicago, the Honorable Xu Jinzhong. Several Loyola students involved in the Asian Studies program assisted at the meeting.
Biology
Beckman Coulter recently awarded a $51,340 grant to Drs. Pickett, Kelly, Heller, and Zainelli in the Department of Biology to assist with the purchase of an automated DNA sequencing machine which will be used by students and faculty in the molecular biology and forensic science programs.
Communication
The Department of Communication, the Black World Studies program, the Institute of Pastoral Studies, and University Ministry sponsored a presentation in November 2006 by Prosper Ndabishuriye, a leader in peace and reconciliation efforts in Burundi and Rwanda. Ndabishuriye is the founder of Youth in Reconstruction of the World in Destruction, an organization centered on rebuilding homes in the region destroyed by war.
Criminal Justice
Drs. Loretta Stalans and David Olson received an $80,000 grant from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority to examine the risk factors for re-arrest among sex offenders discharged from probation and prison in Illinois.
HistoryThe Board of Regents and the New York State Archives selected Loyola professor Dr. Timothy J. Gilfoyle to receive the 2006 Annual Archives Award for Excellence in Research Using the Holdings of the New York State Archives. The award recognizes Gilfoyle's extensive research in crime and social deviance in 19th and early 20th Century America. This research has resulted in the publication of two books, City of Eros: New York City, Prostitution, and the Commercialization of Sex, 1790-1920 (1992) and A Pickpocket's Tale: The Underworld of Nineteenth-Century New York (2006). |

Islamic World Studies

Journalism
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), the nation's oldest and most recognized journalism organization, honored Loyola's journalism students and faculty advisor Beth Konrad at the "Mark of Excellence" awards luncheon where Loyola was named the Top Student Chapter in the region. Judges cited the chapter's work with a community leadership project interfacing the Rogers Park community and Loyola's community radio station, WLUW.
On September 20,2006, three of Chicago's top journalists appeared at Loyola for a discussion on "The Power of Persuasion in the Shaping of Public Opinion," hosted by Loyola's distinguished journalist in residence, Phil Ponce. Joining Ponce on the panel were Chicago Tribune editorial page editor Bruce Dold, Chicago-Sun Times columnist Laura Washington, and Chicago Tribune columnist Eric Zorn. These esteemed journalists discussed an array of topics, including real-life anecdotes about the life of a journalist, what shapes their respective columns or stories, and how they deal with reader feedback.
Mathematics and Statistics
Timothy O'Brien, Ph.D., has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct research, consult, and lecture in the statistics department of Thailand's Chiang Mai University (CMU) for the 2006-2007 academic year. While there, O'Brien will establish and direct a campus-wide statistical consulting center at CMU, teach courses, conduct research on malaria and HIV/AIDS, and give lectures in biostatistics, bioinformatics, and gene expression microarray data analysis.

Political ScienceBashirah Mack, a junior Political Science major and Black World Studies/Islamic World Studies double minor from Atlanta, Georgia, was recently awarded a national study abroad scholarship. Mack was selected as a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship in the amount of $4,000. Mack is attending the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) Full Curriculum and African Studies program in Accra, Ghana, at the University of Ghana at Legon this Spring. |

Psychology
Dr. William A. Yost was awarded the Acoustical Society of America's Silver Medal in Psychological and Physiological Acoustics for contributions in understanding pitch perception, sound source localization, and auditory processing of complex sounds. The medal was presented December 1, 2006, at the Society's annual meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Dr. Fred Bryant recently authored the book, Savoring: A New Model of Positive Experience, with co-author Joseph Veroff of the University of Michigan. The book summarizes Bryant's 25 years of research on the psychology of joy.
SociologyIn the spring of 2006, the Sociology Club formed the "Student Life Work Group" to examine students' opinions of social spaces on campus. The group surveyed more than 240 students to gauge attitudes concerning the use and comfort of many on-campus buildings, and will enhance their statistical data with a series of qualitative interviews to be completed in spring 2007. A brief overview of the Sociology Club's project was published in The Phoenix, Loyola's campus newspaper, on April 26, 2006. |

Theatre
Professor of Theatre Jonathan Wilson will direct a production of August Wilson's "Fences" in regional theatres in Hartford, CT, Dallas, TX and Portland, OR. Assistant Professor Jacqueline Firkins will design costumes for these productions, and alumni Don Mayo Jr. and Wandachristine Hudson will play major roles.
