Four CAS Students Win Fulbright Awards

The Fulbright Program is the largest U.S. international exchange program and offers opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in research and teaching projects while improving their foreign language skills. Student selection for the Fulbright Program emphasizes leadership potential, academic and professional excellence, and a commitment to mutual understanding.

Loyola produced a bumper crop of Fulbright winners for the 2006-2007 academic year, and the majors and interests of these student winners are as diverse as their host countries. Erica Bauer (Political Science & Psychology) is currently in Germany exploring the cultural differences between German and U.S. voters regarding the impact of moral indiscretions of political candidates. Maria Kuntz (International Studies, French, and Theatre) is in Greece to research the role of non-governmental organizations in protecting the rights of immigrants. Also earning Fulbright Fellowships were Jamie Mandell (Anthropology), to study NGOs in Jordan, and Joseph Rieman (Philosophy), to work as a teaching assistant in Germany.

Although Loyola's Fulbright success story is obviously due to the outstanding efforts, achievements, and proposals of our talented student award winners, applying for a Fulbright Fellowship also requires the time and expertise of numerous faculty advisors. Credit and special thanks are due to Dr. Greg Hamill (former CAS Associate Dean), Dr. Zouhair Ghazzal (History), and Dr. Peter Schraeder (Political Science), as well as numerous other faculty members who commented on essay drafts and provided expert mentorship to these applicants.

The College of Arts and Sciences congratulates the achievements and dedication of all involved in this successful year for Loyola Fulbright applicants.
