Career Inventory Testing
Career planning is a dynamic, ongoing process of matching yourself with the right career in the right environment. Knowing yourself—your personal and work values, personality characteristics, interests, skills and lifestyle choices—is an essential first step in the career planning process.
Taking the time to identify and understand your preferences will help you focus your career exploration, clarify your options, and actually increase your chances of getting a job. You will be able to clearly articulate who you are and what you have to offer. You'll do better and be happier because you took time to find the right job.
The best way to begin your self-assessment is to meet with one of our career counselors during our walk-in hours or by appointment. We prefer you meet with a counselor first who can explain the testing process and how we will review your results with you when you are finished. The Career Development Center offers a number of tools to assist you in your self-assessment process.
- Strong Interest Inventory (SII)
The Strong Interest Inventory measures your level of interest in occupational areas, activities, school subjects and work environments, then compares your interests with working professionals in a wide variety of occupations. - Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)
The MBTI helps you identify your personality preferences, including how you focus your attention and energy, how you acquire or gather information, make decisions, arrive at conclusions, or make judgments, and how you relate to the outer world. Knowing and understanding your preferences can help you to make career and occupational choices consistent with what is most interesting and satisfying to you.
The Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator are available online at https://online.cpp.com. In order to take the Strong and/or the Myers-Briggs, you must first meet with a Career Advisor in a walk-in or formal appointment or be registered in the CPSY 224 Career and Life Planning Lab class. Please contact the Career Development Center if you have any problems accessing the inventories.

This game-like inventory uses special "Skills" cards to help you identify and label your strengths and skill preferences. In addition, it helps you determine various skills you can transfer to a variety of different jobs. The skills profile developed as a part of this exercise can assist with decisions about career direction, help to develop new skills, and aid with planning, writing resumes and interviewing. - Values Exercise
This exercise helps you identify your work-related and life values. It helps you understand what is really important to you. Knowing your values is essential in making successful career choices.
