Reading - Certification Only

Reading Teacher Endorsement

Our Reading Teacher Endorsement program is for teachers who currently hold a bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate and would like to become a highly-qualified reading teacher. The program can be completed by enrolling in eight courses during four semesters, which qualifies for the Illinois State designation of a quality teacher of reading.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for the Reading Teacher Endorsement, students must hold a bachelor's degree and an Illinois teaching certificate.

Program Requirements

The State of Illinois Reading Teacher endorsement requires 24 semester hours (7 courses and a practicum). Certificate program course requirements may be modified only by departmentally approved equivalents. A minimum of 21 semester hours must be taken at Loyola.

Technology Expectation
All students are provided Internet access to link electronically to classmates, faculty and student services. In order to use these technological resources, all students must have the computer skills necessary to support academic work (i.e., word processing, PowerPoint) and to access e-mail and the Internet.

Continuous Enrollments
Students in certification only programs are required to maintain the status of continuous enrollment during their program of studies. This means that during each semester of each academic year (excluding Summer Sessions), each student must enroll in at least one course. (See SOE Policy: Academic Standing - Continuous Enrollment)

A formal leave of absence may be granted upon request and the approval of the School of Education’s Associate Dean of Student Academic Services.

Candidates in all programs leading to Illinois certification are required to pass an Illinois Test of Basic Skills and a State Criminal Background Check.
