Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology Full-Disclosure Student Information

The Counseling Psychology program has curricular strengths in multiculturalism, prevention and outreach, and career development that make it unique among APA-approved Counseling Psychology programs. We emphasize collaborative research training, experiences in teaching and clinical supervision, and clinical experiences within urban settings with diverse populations. The program educates students to become both scientists and practitioners. It is the only Counseling Psychology program in the Chicago area.

Admissions

Faculty review all applicants and we look at each applicant’s "total package". We look closely at GPAs, graduate level coursework, personal statements, letters of recommendation, research and clinical experiences. We take particular note of research experiences. Finally, we personally interview applicants to determine if there is a good match between the applicant and our program. In other words, it is important for us to attempt to determine if the applicant's personal and professional interests would be met by our programs strengths and emphases.

The average graduate GPA for those students that we have accepted into the program since 2001 is 3.7/4.0. The average GRE scores since 2001 are: Verbal = 561, Quantitative = 612, and the Psychology Subject test = 587. In particular, for the students admitted into the class of 2007, the average verbal score was 544 with a range from 410 to 700, average quantitative score was 623 with a range from 490 to 790, the average psychology subject test score was 614 with a range from 510 to 740 and the average GPA was 3.92.

We attempt to achieve diversity in our student body along multiple dimensions that include gender, race/ethnicity, age, and sexual orientation. Thirty-two percent of our current students are Students of Color and 70% are women.

Program Costs

For the current incoming class, all students are supported with Graduate Assistantships which provide stipends of at least $12,000 plus a tuition scholarship.  The majority of students are supported with Graduate Assistantships of some sort while they are taking coursework in the program (typically 3 years). Students are required to pay student activities fees and health insurance together these total approximately $1800 annually.   Students are also required to purchase books and materials for courses.

Time to completion

The overall mean number of years to completion for all graduates since 2001 is 6.4 years. All of our doctoral students enter with a Masters degree. Most students complete their coursework by the third year, thus only the dissertation and pre-doctoral internship remain. The average years to completion is decreasing due to some structural changes in our program to facilitate the completion of dissertation proposals prior to pre-doctoral internship. Thus, students who entered the program in 2000 took and average of 6 ears to completion, those who entered in 2001 and 2002 took an average of 5 years to completion, and those who entered in 2003 took an average of 4 years to completion.
