Environmental Action and Leadership

“Going green” is much more than a popular catch phrase: it is also a lifestyle. We currently face a global environmental crisis. Many of the planet’s non-renewable resources are depleting at a rapid rate. Human activity and negligence are contributing to this depletion. Efforts are underway to mitigate the destruction of the global environment, seek alternative energy sources, and encourage reliance upon recyclable resources.

Loyola University Chicago’s new minor in environmental action and leadership allows students to explore environmental topics and gain hands-on experience engaging in the local community. The minor reflects the Jesuit characteristics of education: responsible action in the interest of social justice and global awareness.

THE MINOR

Loyola’s interdisciplinary minor in environmental action and leadership comprises coursework in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The minor is ideal for students looking to augment their major field of study with environmental coursework and enhance their credentials with hands-on experience. Upon graduation, students with a background in environmental issues can market themselves to the rising number of employers that recognize the need for environmental awareness in the workplace.

The demand for individuals familiar with environmental issues and processes has grown significantly in recent years, especially in non-science fields. Students with a background in

environmental studies pursue careers in law, marketing, business, education, economics, politics, public health, business planning, architecture, and public administration, with potential employment opportunities in advocacy/lobbying groups, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
