Classes during Spring Semester 2009 are offered at our beautiful Lake Shore Campus along Lake Michigan on the north side of Chicago.

Applicants

Applicants should have at least a high-intermediate level of English and be interested in pursuing a Loyola degree program in the future.

U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents may study full-time or part-time. International students must apply for an F-1 visa and study full-time. Full-time study in the ESL Program is 21 credit hours.

All ESL Program classes are $270 per credit hour. Most classes are 3 credit hours. International students with an F-1 visa must study full-time. The full-time tuition for the 2008-2009 academic year is $5670 per 16-week semester (additional university fees apply).  

Current Loyola students may register for ESL classes directly in LOCUS.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

 
Deadline for new F-1 students: November 28, 2008
Deadline for international transfer students December 26, 2008
Deadline for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents: January 2, 2009
*Late applications will only be considered if there is space available in the program.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

For admission into the ESL Program, please submit the following:

1. Non-degree undergraduate application (PDF). This is the application you must use in Fall and Spring to enter the ESL Program. A separate application process is required for your degree program.

2. Non-refundable application fee of $25 in US dollars, by check or money order payable to Loyola University Chicago.

3. Proof of secondary or high-school completion: A high-school diploma or a university transcript. Photocopies are acceptable.

4. Proof of English skills  ESL classes are only offered at the High-Intermediate to High-Advanced levels. A photocopy of a grade report showing successful completion of intermediate level English courses or a TOEFL Score report is sufficient.

5. A written statement from you explaining why you want to study in the Loyola ESL Program and how this relates to your future goals.

6. Your e-mail address, country of birth, country of citizenship.

7. International students who need an F-1 visa, must also submit:

  • Verification of funding, only for students who need a student visa. The amount that must be shown on the bank statement for Fall and Spring is $10,570 per semester which covers university expenses, room and board, but not health insurance. University expenses for Fall 2008 are $5670 tuition for 21 credit hours of full time ESL study, $88 CTA U-Pass fee (required of all students), $305 student activities fee (required of all students), and approximately $300 for books and supplies.
  • Copy of a valid passport.

        NOTE: We do NOT offer beginning level courses. You must prove that your English skills are at least "high-intermediate" before we are able to accept you into the program and issue an I-20. A TOEFL score may be required as part of the application in Fall and Spring if the information you provide is inconclusive. You may be required to take a placement test upon arrival and before you register for classes. If your skills do not match the minimum requirements for the ESL program at Loyola, we will release you to transfer to another program in the Chicago area or to a school of your choosing with instruction at the appropriate level where you will be able to make good progress.
