Student Community Site Coordinators
Student Leadership in Service
Request an application for a community site coordinator position HERE.
The Center for Experiential Learning (CEL) at Loyola University Chicago, which coordinates Loyola’s academic internship, service-learning, and community-based Federal Work-Study (FWS) programs, is currently establishing a team of seven student community site coordinators (CSCs). CSCs will be recruited from current first year students so as to have a second year student team in 2008-2009.
Each semester, CSCs will serve as liaisons between 7-8 community organizations and the CEL, assisting with all aspects of placing and supporting Loyola volunteers, interns, and FWS employees at those organizations. CSC duties will include:
-
Contacting assigned agencies at the beginning of the semester to determine their precise needs for Loyola students, including the details (locations, schedules, application processes, scheduled orientations) of each service placement, internship, and/or FWS job;
-
Posting placement availabilities/position details on agencies’ pages on Loyola’s eRecruiting system and encouraging and supporting agency participation in Loyola-sponsored Community Service/FWS Job & Placement Fairs;
-
Maintaining rosters of students working or serving at each assigned agency;
-
Facilitating community partners’ organization of group orientations, trainings, etc.;
-
Collaborating with the partner agency (if deemed necessary by the partner) to produce and deliver cultural competency-enhancing trainings and/or materials for students;
-
Coordinating the distribution and collection of all paperwork (including medical clearances, background checks, references, learning contracts, etc.) required of Loyola student volunteers/employees by agencies;
-
Monitoring the progress of students at agencies by conducting informal email “check-ins” during the semester;
-
Maintaining ongoing contact with agency personnel to monitor satisfaction with Loyola students, CEL program procedures, etc.;
-
Collecting student and program evaluation data from specific agencies;
-
Supporting ongoing conversations between CEL staff and agencies about subsequent semesters of partnership, including the development of further collaborations with Loyola (e.g., project-based service-learning, undergraduate engaged research, etc.).
CSCs will have weekly opportunities to reflect on their experiences of serving in the community, both as part of the weekly CEL team meeting and as part of a smaller weekly CSC team meeting. CSCs will be trained in leadership, asset-based community development, and strategies for student civic engagement. They will be supervised by CEL staff.
The CSC team will help to respond to the particular needs of community partner organizations that collaborate most closely with Loyola through the CEL. At the same time, their efforts will also simplify the process of securing meaningful community involvements for their peers, thus supporting civic engagement by the broader Loyola student body.
Work Schedule: CSCs must be available for training (paid) during the week of August 18-22, 2008. During the semester, students will work 10 hours/week at the Center for Experiential Learning’s offices in the Sullivan Center for Student Services. (Students may need to work extra hours in the first several weeks of each semester.) Office hours are 8:30 AM – 6 PM.
Compensation: CSCs will be paid $8/hour. CSCs may also be eligible for an additional $1,000 AmeriCorps award provided through Midwest Campus Compact’s Citizen Fellows Award Program; details TBA.
Eligibility: Student applicants should be rising second students (i.e. current first year students) with at least $2000 in FWS monies as part of their financial aid package.
Applications: Available upon request from experiential@luc.edu.
Other Application Requirements: Applicants will be asked to submit a resume, cover letter, and printout of their financial aid award letter with their application, as well as at least one letter of recommendation from a Loyola faculty/staff member and an authorized “Eligibility for Federal Work-Study Employment” form for 2008-2009 (available at the HUB in the Sullivan Center).
