Academic Scholarships for Students Entering Fall 2008
To be considered for any of Loyola University Chicago's academic scholarships, students must submit a completed Application for Undergraduate Admission (there is no separate scholarship application). Because freshmen should be admitted no later than February 1 for scholarship consideration, the completed application should be sent to the Undergraduate Admission Office by January 15. Transfer students must be admitted by July 1 for scholarship consideration.

Each application is carefully read and scholarships are competitively awarded based on outstanding academic achievement, and standardized test scores (ACT or SAT). Admission applications are reviewed for scholarship consideration on a first-come, first-served basis.
Unless otherwise indicated, all Loyola merit-based scholarships are restricted to tuition only.
Academic and Service Scholarships: Freshmen
Presidential, Damen, Loyola and Trustee Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to academically qualified students based on information provided in the admission application process, without regard to financial need.
- The Presidential Scholarship is a four-year scholarship, totaling $56,000 ($14,000 per year)
- The Damen Scholarship is a four-year scholarship, totaling $40,000 ($10,000 per year)
- The Loyola Scholarship is a four-year scholarship, totaling $34,000 ($8,500 per year)
- The Trustee Scholarship is a four-year scholarship, totaling $24,000 ($6,000 per year)
Academic Scholarships: Transfers
These scholarships, which range from $4,000 to $6,000 per year, are offered to academically qualified undergraduate transfer students, who have a minimum of 30 credit hours of transferable coursework. Scholarships are renewable for up to three years if students maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and complete at least 12 credit hours each term.
Mid-Year Transfers with less than 30 hours:
Students transferring to Loyola for the Spring Semester with less than 30 hours of transferable credit will not receive scholarship consideration until an official transcript from the Fall Semester has been received.
Note: Scholarships are renewed at the award amount applicable to the student's first year of enrollment.
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Scholarships
An unlimited number of $3,000 scholarships are awarded to new students who have transferred to Loyola from community colleges and who are members of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Proof of membership is required. Students with previous bachelor's degrees are not eligible. Full-time enrollment at Loyola must immediately follow the two-year college. Prospective candidates should be admitted to Loyola by November 1 (for Spring enrollment) and July 1 (for Fall enrollment). Heritage Awards for Freshmen
Chicago Catholic Heritage Award
This $10,000 award ($2,500 per year for four consecutive years of full-time enrollment) is made to all new freshmen graduating from Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Diocese of Joliet. This award is restricted to tuition, and is made when the student is admitted.
Jesuit Heritage Award
This $10,000 award ($2,500 per year for four consecutive years of full-time enrollment) is made to all new freshmen graduating from Jesuit high schools who are Jesuit Secondary Education constituent members in the United States and Puerto Rico. This award is restricted to tuition, and is made when the student is admitted.
Students graduating from a Jesuit high school in Chicago will be awarded the Jesuit Heritage Award only.

Loyola also recognizes talented students through a variety of other scholarships that are awarded without consideration of financial need. Please review the following list of scholarship opportunities that will provide you, if eligible, with additional resources to help make your Loyola education more affordable. Air Force ROTC Scholarships
These scholarships are for outstanding young men and women enrolled in the ROTC program. This program is offered to Loyola students in cooperation with the Illinois Institute of Technology. Prospective candidates must be admitted to Loyola by February 15. For more information, contact the Unit Admissions Officer at: 312.567.3807.
Students who receive an ROTC scholarship are also awarded a grant by Loyola to be used for room and board expenses. Students must file the FAFSA to be considered for this grant. ROTC benefits are incorporated into students' total aid eligibility. Eligibility for other types of educational assistance may be impacted as a result of receiving ROTC benefits.
Army ROTC Scholarships
These scholarships are for outstanding young men and women enrolled in the ROTC program. This program is offered to Loyola students in cooperation with the University of Illinois at Chicago. Athletic Scholarships
These scholarships are offered to students demonstrating outstanding athletic ability who plan to participate in inter-collegiate athletics at Loyola. For information, please contact Loyola's Athletics department. Scholarship amounts will vary and are determined by the athletics department.
Chicago Metro History Fair Scholarship
This $8,000 scholarship ($2,000 each year for four consecutive years) is awarded to one new freshman planning to attend Loyola who has been named a winner in the Chicago Metro History Fair. Prospective candidates must attend a Chicago metropolitan area school and must be accepted to Loyola by April 1. For more information, contact Edward R. Chicago Public Schools Science Fair Scholarship
This $8,000 scholarship ($2,000 each year for four consecutive years) is awarded to one new freshman accepted to Loyola and recommended by the Chicago Public Schools Student Science Fair Scholarship committee. Candidates must be graduating from a Chicago Public School and must be admitted to Loyola by April 1.
Education Scholarships
Two Half Tuition scholarships are offered to incoming freshmen entering the School of Education. Applicants must have a composite score of 22 or higher on the ACT or a 1010 or higher on the SAT. Qualified candidates who have already been admitted to Loyola may apply. Finalists are required to give a personal interview in Spring 2008. Recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for renewal.
Elaine Bruggemeier Debate Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to students with previous debate or forensic experience who plan to participate in the inter-collegiate debate program at Loyola. Loyola sponsors a policy debate program that competes in NDT and CEDA. Scholarship amounts will vary. Prospective candidates must be admitted to Loyola by March 1. Ignatian Honors Program Scholarships
Three full-tuition scholarships, renewable for three consecutive years, are available on a competitive basis. Scholarship candidates are selected from new freshmen admitted to Loyola's Interdisciplinary Honors Program by February 1. Selected candidates for the scholarship will be asked to attend an on-campus interview with Interdisciplinary Honors Program faculty during the Spring Semester. If you meet the criteria for the Interdisciplinary Honors Program, and want to apply, the application will become available December 1.

Immaculata High School of Chicago Alumnae Association Scholarships
Scholarships are available to alumnae of Immaculata High School of Chicago or families of Immaculata High School of Chicago alumnae. Prospective candidates must be accepted to Loyola by May 1. Eligible family members include: children, stepchildren, adopted children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren of Immaculata High School of Chicago alumnae and also descendants of spouses of alumnae. Jesuit, Blessed Virgin Mary (B.V.M.) and Sisters of Christian Charity High School Half-Tuition Scholarships
These half-tuition scholarships are awarded to one student from each Jesuit, B.V.M., Sisters of Christian Charity high school in the United States and Puerto Rico. Candidates must have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and must be nominated by their high school principal or their designate (one nomination per school).
The scholarship replaces any other previously awarded Loyola merit-based scholarship. However, the recipient may retain a Jesuit/Catholic Heritage Award in addition to this scholarship. For scholarship renewal, recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher and complete 20 hours of community service per semester.
Latino Art Beat
Two $8,000 scholarships ($2,000 each year for four consecutive years) are awarded to three new students accepted to Loyola and also named winners in Chicago's Latino Art Beat competition by Mr. Don Rossi Nuncio, president. These scholarships are restricted to tuition.
National Merit/National Achievement Finalists
Five full-tuition scholarships are available to students who have been named National Merit/National Achievement finalists by the National Merit Corporation. Qualified students should submit a copy of their award letter from the National merit Corporation as their application for one of these scholarships by March 1. A committee will review each student's application for admission, writing sample and transcript; the five most academically qualified will receive the full-tuition scholarships.
Any National Merit/National Achievement finalist who does not receive one of the full-tuition scholarships may receive a Loyola-sponsored $2,000 scholarship.
For both scholarships students must name Loyola as their first-choice school with the National Merit Corporation. The full-tuition scholarship recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher for renewal. Recipients of the $2,000 scholarships must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Navy ROTC Scholarships
These scholarships are for outstanding young men and women enrolled in the ROTC program. This program is offered in cooperation with Northwestern University. Prospective candidates must be admitted to Loyola by February 15. For more information, contact LT Michael Charnota, USN at: 847.491.2041.
Students who receive an ROTC scholarship are also awarded a grant by Loyola to be used for room and board expenses. Students must file the FAFSA to be considered for this grant. O'Brien-Vrba Scholarships
Students from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin or Michigan who reside in cities with a population of less than 500,000 may qualify for these awards. Read more in the O'Brien-Vrba Instructions (PDF). Prospective candidates must be admitted to Loyola by April 1 and must submit the O'Brien-Vrba Scholarship Undergraduate Application or O'Brien-Vrba Scholarship Graduate Application. Scholarship amounts average $2,000 per year. Undergraduate and graduate scholarships will be available after January 1.
Plocieniak Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen of who are fluent in reading and speaking the Polish language. All candidates are required to take a fluency examination on Loyola's campus in March for the upcoming academic year. Scholarship amounts will vary. Prospective candidates must be admitted to Loyola by February 1. To be considered for a Plocieniak Scholarship, please complete the referral form and select the Plocieniak Scholarship.
Public Accounting Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded to incoming students who have been admitted as accounting majors in the School of Business Administration. Scholarship amounts vary. Prospective candidates should have a strong academic record, must be admitted to Loyola and submit this application to the Scholarship Committee, Department of Accounting by March 1.
Rambler Award for Extraordinary Service and Leadership
Thank you for your interest but we are no longer accepting applications for the Rambler Award for students entering fall 2008
Loyola values students who lead extraordinary lives through their commitment to service and leadership within their communities. These students are wonderful additions to our campus community, even if they don't qualify for academic scholarships. We recognize these distinguished students and their outstanding leadership and service achievements through Rambler Awards, of $5,000 each, awarded annually. Only students who do not meet merit-based scholarships criteria qualify for these awards. You must be admitted by February 1 to receive this scholarship.
If you wish to be considered for a Rambler Award, please complete online referral form and select the Rambler Leadership Award. Once your request has been received, the scholarship committee will evaluate your leadership, service and experiences to determine your eligibility. The Committee will evaluate two areas:
- Leadership/Activities—On your resume, list all leadership positions you have held, along with the names of the organizations involved. Also provide the number of years in which you have been a member and the number of hours per month dedicated toward these organizations. List this information for activities in your school and community. Also include any awards you have received.
- Service/Volunteer—On your resume, please provide a detailed description of the service you have committed to in your community and describe any organizations in which you have volunteered. Include the number of years you have been involved and the number of hours per month committed to each area. Also include any special recognition or awards you have received as a result of your involvement.
Martin J. Svaglic Humanities Scholarship
Two $2,500 per year scholarships will be awarded to qualified new freshmen or transfer students who have been admitted into one of the following areas in the humanities: classical studies, communication, English, fine arts, history, modern languages, philosophy, theology or theatre. Prospective candidates must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. New freshmen must: have a minimum 26 on the ACT or an 1170 on the SAT; and be admitted to Loyola prior to February 25. All qualified, admitted students should complete this application and it must be returned by March 15. The recipients will be notified by April 1.
Theatre Scholarships
These scholarships are available to freshmen and transfer students accepted to Loyola who will pursue a major in theatre. Zolp Scholarships
These four-year scholarships are available to students accepted to Loyola who are Catholic and whose last name of Zolp appears on a birth certificate and confirmation certificate. Prospective candidates must be admitted to Loyola by April 1. Scholarship amounts vary depending upon fund availability and the number of eligible recipients.

Army ROTC Scholarships

Evoke
The Evoke Scholars Program has been established as a result of a generous gift from the Lilly Endowment Inc., an Indianapolis-based, private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by three members of the Lilly family -- J.K. Lilly Sr. and sons J.K. Jr. and Eli -- through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. The Evoke Scholarship Program will recognize five Loyola University Chicago sophomores or juniors with a one year scholarship of $2,500 each. Eligible candidates must be students who are actively exploring a career in lay or ordained church ministry. This scholarship is renewable on a competitive basis. Qualified students must complete an application form or visit http://www.luc.edu/evoke/evokescholars_rules.shtml for more information and consent to a personal interview with members of the Evoke staff.
Criteria:
- Sophomore or Junior status (this scholarship is not open to currently enrolled first year students)
- Full time enrollment
- 3.0 minimum cumulative grade point average
- Demonstrated volunteer service or paid employment in one or more community-, church-, or faith-based settings.
Scholarship recipients will be required to:
- Complete 150 “discernment hours” in which you interview or shadow those working in ministry, attend conferences related to your potential ministerial interests, and/or complete volunteer work in various ministerial settings over the course of one academic year.
- Meet bi-weekly with other Evoke Scholars in a small faith-sharing group for theological reflection.
- Complete one Evoke Scholars retreat day or weekend.
- Meet at least once a month with a spiritual director for ongoing discernment.
- Participate in two personal interviews with members of the Evoke staff, conducted near the end of the all and spring terms.
Applications must be postmarked by February 15, 2008 and finalists must be available for an interview with the Evoke staff between March 10 and March 20, 2008.
LULAB Scholarships
Enrique "Rick" Guerrero Undergraduate Scholarship application
This scholarship is named in memory of Rick Guerrero, who served as president of Loyola’s Latino American Student Association (LASO) while he was an undergraduate at Loyola University Chicago. Guerrero passed away unexpectedly in 1992 while playing football with friends at Loyola Park near the Lake Shore Campus.
LULAB wishes to recognize a talented Loyola undergraduate student currently enrolled as a full-time student with the Enrique "Rick" Guerrero Scholarship. The award is granted on the basis of the candidate’s academic accomplishments as well as service to the Loyola community and/or Latino community in his/her area.
Jose Jaime Esparza Graduate/Professional School Scholarship application
This scholarship is named in memory of Jose Jaime Esparza, who graduated from Loyola in 1991. He died while trying to rescue his father from a house fire in 2000. At the time of his death, Esparza was the General Manager of Community Services for the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago, and he worked with community groups and youth in educating them to help save lives.
LULAB wishes to recognize a talented full-time Loyola graduate student with the Jose Jamie Esparza Graduate/Professional School Scholarship. The award is granted on the basis of the candidate’s academic accomplishments as well as service to the Loyola community and/or Latino community in his/her area.
Eric Solorio Scholarship application
This scholarship is named in memory of Eric Solorio, a Chicago police officer and Loyola alumnus who died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident while on duty as a member of the elite Target Response Unit. Eric received a posthumous B.A. in Spanish from Loyola two months after completing the requirements for the degree. LULAB wishes to recognize a talented Loyola undergraduate or graduate student who is enrolled at least half-time with the Eric Solorio Scholarship. The award is granted on the basis of the candidate’s academic accomplishments as well as his/her pursuit of a career in law enforcement.
Upgrade Scholarship Program
As a part of the evaluation of Loyola’s financial aid programs we also examine the growth in the demand for need-based financial assistance for the most financially needy of our students. The end result was that Loyola made the decision to eliminate the Upgrade Scholarship program. The funds recovered through this decision are now being used to increase the level of funding for the most needy of students attending Loyola.Departmental Scholarships
Once you are a student at Loyola, you may qualify for scholarships offered by academic departments. These awards are typically offered to students beyond the freshman level, so after you are established in your major, you can begin to make inquiries with your academic department. The number and amount of awards vary by department, as do eligibility criteria. Contact your academic department for more information about scholarship options.
