Blackberry Internet Service

To setup your device to use the Blackberry Internet Service (BIS), please follow the directions at the following link  http://www.blackberry.com/support/client/index.shtml

After you setup your blackberry account, you are ready to forward your GroupWise email to your Blackberry by setting up a GroupWise rule. If you are using the GroupWise desktop client, you can create a rule by going to Tools > Rules and selecting New. If you are using the GroupWise Web client, go to Options > Rules and select Create. When you transfer email using a GroupWise rule, all of your email, including SPAM gets transferred. You can filter out the SPAM in the same rule. This example shows you one way to setup your rule.

You can synchronize your Contacts and GroupWise Calendar using the Blackberry Desktop Manager.

To install the Blackberry Desktop Manager, insert the CD (provided with your phone) containing the Desktop manager software.  If the setup program does not start, right click on the CD drive and click on autorun.  Click on install Desktop Manager Software and use the default settings.  Choose the Blackberry Internet Service option when prompted.

When the installation is done you should see the following screen (for version 4.1)

Connect your Blackberry to your computer, and click on options connection settings.

Click on detect.  Once the software finds your device, click on OK.  Next double click on the Intellisync icon.

Click on the Configure PIM button.  On the following screen you will be able to choose what you want to sync to your device.

When you click on an item you will get the following screen.

Choose 6.5 and click ok.  When you are done setting up the items you want to Sync click OK in the device configuration window then click the Synchronize Now button in the Intellisync to sync the device.

Information Technology Services highly recommends your Blackberry be locked with a password.  With an unlocked Blackberry, all your email, contacts, personal and university confidential information is accessible by anyone.

To enable password protection, go to the Options application and then the Security function.  Select the Password field and wheel click.  Select Change Option and wheel click.  Select Enable and wheel click.  Now go to the Security Timeout field and wheel click.  Select Change Option and wheel click. Select how much time of inactivity is allowed before the Blackberry will go into password lock click the wheel. Select Save and you will be asked to enter a new password to unlock your Blackberry and then to confirm the password.

In Case of Emergency (ICE) Information

Emergency Workers recommend everyone adds In Case Of Emergency (ICE) info in their mobile phones in case of accident or natural disaster so rescue workers know who to contact.

One way to provide an ICE number and still secure your Blackberry with a password is to put your ICE information on the lock page that is displayed when your Blackberry is locked.

From the main Blackberry page, go to the Options application (the wrench), click the wheel, scroll to Owner and click the wheel.  Under the Information heading, you can enter your ICE information. Add your name, department and phone number at the top of the screen, followed by:
In Case of Emergency Call
(your emergency contact name)
(your emergency contact phone number)
