FAQs

The ten -day term has the same contact hours as regular academic year sessions and the six-week and eight-week sessions during Summer Sessions. J-Term classes meet daily for four hours on-campus. Online courses will have daily synchronous sessions of certain duration depending on the class. Students are expected to spend approximately six hours a day studying, undergoing a field experience, or engaged in projects.

Your school should make the decision whether to accept Loyola course credits. Please ask your academic advisor about appropriate courses.

Visiting students should contact Maria Lettiere in the College of Arts and Sciences for issues related to Loyola courses. The office is located at the Lake Shore Campus, Sullivan Center, Rm 235. The phone number is 773-508-3500. Loyola students should visit Academic Advising at the freshman and sophomore level and the Dean of their school or college at the junior and senior level. 

Students withdraw through LOCUS.  Students can withdraw from the term without grade or financial penalty no later than Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 11:59 pm.  The last day to drop a class with a grade of "W" ("WF" thereafter) is Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at 11:59 pm.  For the complete Withdrawal Schedule, please, refer to the J-Term Registration and Class Schedule.

Please note that by registering for classes, you accept responsibility for paying all tuition and other fees associated with these classes.

If your academic plans change, you must take action to withdraw from your classes. Failure to attend class does not result in an automatic withdrawal or removal of charges from your student account.

No, but faculty may schedule final exams and/or projects during the final class meeting.

Students can only register for a maximum of 3 credit hours for J-Term.

We will process your application within 5-7 business days and send you an e-mail with instructions. Visiting students may register by completing a non-degree application. All applications must be submitted in full by Friday, December 16, 2016 for consideration.

After you have been admitted to Loyola, please contact the Information Desk at 773.508.7190 for your universal ID and password.  You will need this information to register for classes through LOCUS.  Please note that some courses may be fully enrolled when you login to register.  We suggest that you keep checking LOCUS to see if a seat opens.

The Office for International Programs (OIP) has scheduled two J-Term study abroad options for J-Term 2017.

These 3-credit courses offer students an immersive study experience in a unique international context. We encourage students to discuss options with a Study Abroad advisor. Please call OIP at 773-508-7706 to set up a meeting.

If you are currently studying in the U.S. on a student visa, you can apply and attend Loyola's J-Term. Visa paperwork, however, is not issued for J-Term. Students who are not currently enrolled in classes at a university or college in the U.S cannot attend classes in this term. If you would like further information, please contact Tami Renner in the Office for International Programs at trenner@luc.edu. Housing is not provided for students attending J-Term on Loyola's Lakeshore Campus.  Housing will be available for the two classes that will be offered at our LUREC campus in Woodstock, IL.

J-Term 2017 undergraduate tuition is $751 per credit hour. Graduate tuition for the School of Social Work is $1007 per credit hour.  Some program-specific tuition may vary. Visit the Office of the Bursar to find out more about tuition.  E-Bills for J-Term courses will be generated in mid-December and all tuition and fees for J-Term courses will be due on Thursday, January 5, 2017.

Student activity and technology fees will be waived for the J-Term session.  Lab and associated class fees, however, will apply to some courses.  Please review the fee schedule for more information.

Limited financial aid is available to students to be applied to the tuition, fees and book expenses of January-Term.  Costs for the J-Term must be processed through loans separate from those in place for Fall and Spring semesters. Aid for Fall/Spring is not available to meet the costs for January Term courses.   

Note: No financial aid is available for living expenses, as the living expenses for this period of time are already included in the costs considered for Fall/Spring financial aid awards.

Contact the Office of the Bursar at 773.508.3180 or bursar@luc.edu. Please note that Loyola University does not mail paper bills to students.  All billing is done through a student's LOCUS account.

Please purchase books through the Loyola Bookstore– The bookstore website is available to place course material orders.  Students who order by December 15 will get their materials by the beginning of class.  The bookstore cannot guarantee delivery by January 3rd of orders placed online after December 15. Students may also purchase their materials in the store during winter break.

At the Water Tower Campus, the bookstore is located at 26 E. Pearson St. At the Lake Shore Campus, the bookstore is located at 6435 North Sheridan Rd. 

 

Yes, you must have a Campus Card to identify yourself as a Loyola student and to use many campus facilities, including the libraries. If you currently do not have a Campus Car, at any time after you register for courses, go to the Student Services Center, located on the first floor of the Corboy Law Center, 25 E. Pearson, at the Water Tower Campus or the first floor of the Sullivan Center at the Lake Shore Campus. There is no charge for the card, but you will be assessed a $25 fee for replacement cards. 

Please note that you can obtain your card before the start of each session, however, students need to be registered for courses first.

U-Pass will not be available during the breaks per contractual agreements. Shuttles & 8-RIDE will not be in service.

Students who purchased parking permits for the academic year will be able to use their permit for parking throughout January 2017.  Fall 2016 Commuter parking permits will expire on Saturday, December 31st    If a student attending J-Term signs up for Spring 2017 parking by December 30th, 2016, J-Term parking will be included.  Be sure to request this when you purchase your spring permit at the Campus Transportation office.   All other students will pay the daily rate of $7/day.
