Divisions of Advocacy

As one of the top Advocacy programs in the nation, Loyola continues to set a standard for excellence. Loyola graduates are among the most effective trial and appellate lawyers in Chicago, and in the nation. Many graduates attribute their success to Loyola's highly regarded advocacy program, which relies on experienced faculty, distinguished practitioners, and the latest technology to prepare students for careers as litigators.

Advocacy is the heart of legal education at Loyola University Chicago. Consistent with its Jesuit heritage and its mission statement, the School of Law vigorously strives "to prepare graduates who will be ethical advocates for justice and the rule of law." Loyola offers its students the opportunity to take courses in trial advocacy, appellate advocacy, and alternative dispute resolution, and to compete in regional, national, and international student competitions, where Loyola teams routinely take top honors. Students may also take part in Loyola's externship program, through which over 120 students each year gain hands-on experience in the practice of law.

Loyola students remain committed to the success of the advocacy program even after graduation. Alumni are vital to the success of the program. In 2002, Loyola established the Circle of Advocates, a group of prominent Chicago attorneys who support the advocacy program by serving as mentors for law students, promoting high ethical standards, hosting lectures, and establishing scholarships for students who plan to pursue careers in advocacy.

As the Midwest center for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, Loyola also assumes a significant role in the education and training of practicing lawyers by hosting programs for professional development. The practice of law and the pursuit of ethical advocacy involve a life-long commitment to the continued acquisition and sharpening of skills, insights and knowledge, and Loyola is proud to be a part of that continued educational process.

The Center for Advocacy (PDF) brings together all of the school's programs and activities in the multifaceted discipline of advocacy, linking its students, faculty and alumni in this endeavor.
