Our Mission

To promote and foster an academic community that celebrates and supports diversity in multiple areas of departmental life.

Goals

  • Promote the inclusion of diversity in the curriculum
  • Provide support, networking opportunities and mentoring to students of diverse backgrounds
  • Increase and support culturally sensitive research on diversity topics
  • Expose students to research addressing diversity issues

Research Topics

Faculty in the Psychology Department conduct research on the following diversity-related topics:

  • Adolescent development and family relationships (Richards, Holmbeck)
  • Adolescents' exposure to violence (Richards)
  • Community psychology & prevention (Durlak)
  • Development of African-Americans during adolescence (Richards, Holmbeck)
  • Families of adolescents with physical disabilities (Holmbeck)
  • HIV/AIDS prevention and psychosocial treatment paradigms (Crawford, Holmbeck)
  • Political & cross-cultural psychology (Ottati)
  • Second-language acquisition, the effects of bilingualism on literacy, word-learning strategies in bilinguals (Davidson)
  • Stress & coping among children and youth of diverse cultures (Richards)
