Scholarships

Applications for JFRC scholarships are accepted one semester prior to the term of intended study at the John Felice Rome Center.     

The John Felice Rome Center offers several awards exclusively for Rome Center students, thanks to generous Rome Center alumni-benefactors. Please carefully review the eligibility and requirements for each award.  The general scholarship application and biographical information form must be filled out for all awards.   


All application materials should be sent to the following address:  Loyola University Chicago, The John Felice Rome Center, 6525 N. Sheridan Road, Chicago, IL 60626.  Materials should not be faxed nor sent via e-mail.  It is the student's responsibility to make sure all materials are received in the Rome Center Office by 5:00 pm Central Time on the deadline date.

The John P. and Mary K. Felice Endowed Scholarship                       Awards Available for Fall 2009 / Spring 2010

Alumni and friends of the Rome Center recognize, through this endowment, the immeasurable contributions of the late John Paul Felice, founder and original director, and his widow, Mary Kate Felice. The Felice Scholarships provide financial relief for tuition and academic expenses.

The majority of the Felice Scholarships (up to $2,500 each) will be awarded to full-year and Fall-only students for study during the Fall 2009 semester.  Occasionally, one award or more may be available to a Spring-only or full-year student for study during the Spring 2010 term.

Eligibility: GPA of 3.2 or better, financial need or qualification for need (application on file with FAFSA), and prior acceptance to the Rome Center.

Requirements: Submission of a 2-page essay focusing on the specific benefits you expect from your study at the Rome Center, what impact this scholarship may have on your plans to study abroad, and how your presence at the Rome Center will enhance the Rome Center community; a completed scholarship application (PDF) with the bottom portion completed by a Financial Aid Administrator at the home institution and the biographical information form (PDF). Finalists may be asked for a personal or telephone interview.

The Murel R. Vogel, S.J., Endowed Scholarship                                          Award Available for Full Year 2009-2010

In tribute to the care and concern shown to Rome Center students by the late Father Murel Vogel, a Jesuit priest who spent many years at the Center, a benefactor's generosity enables a full-year student to receive a scholarship covering tuition, fees, room & board, transportation (airfare, rail passes, etc), and a monthly stipend while studying at the Rome Center.

This award is up to $45,000 for the 2009-10 academic year.

Eligibility: Prior acceptance to the Rome Center for the academic year.

Requirements: Submission of an individualized essay of no more than 4 typed, double-spaced pages stating how receipt of the scholarship would positively advance the applicant's personal and career growth, two written recommendations from adults not related to the applicant who have known him/her for more than 3 years, a CV or resume specifically detailing the candidate's non-academic (work and/or volunteer) activities, a completed scholarship application (PDF) and completed biographical information form(PDF).  Finalists may be asked for a personal or telephone interview.

The Vogelheim/Hansen Scholarship          Awards Available for Full-Year 2009-2010 / Fall 2009 / Spring 2010

Through the generosity of the Katie Vogelheim (JFRC alumna 1977-78), John Hansen, and the John and Katie Hansen Family Foundation, the Vogelheim/Hansen Scholarship was recently created to encourage students from all financial backgrounds to apply to study at the John Felice Rome Center (JFRC).  The scholarship will help to ensure that the JFRC remains financially accessible to a diverse student population.   

For Fall 2009 term/Full-year 2009-10, the Vogelheim/Hansen Scholarship will award between $5,000 and $20,000; for Spring 2010 term, awards between $5,000 and $10,000 may be available. Students who are studying at the JFRC for the full academic year will receive priority, although all eligible students will be considered and are strongly encouraged to apply.  This award will provide financial relief for tuition and academic expenses.

Eligibility:  Financial need (application on file with FAFSA) or qualification for need and acceptance to the JFRC.  

Requirements: Scholarship application (PDF) with the bottom portion completed by a Financial Aid Administrator at the home institution, biographical information form(PDF) and submission of a one-page essay on how you plan to pay for your tuition, fees, room, board and other expenses while you are in Rome for a semester or year (will you use loans, other scholarships, money saved up, etc.?)

Carol T. Robbins Visiting Student Scholarship                                                                  Award Available for Fall 2009

In demonstration of her commitment to the JFRC and its students, JFRC alumna Carol Robbins has created a scholarship endowment to enable visiting students from universities and colleges throughout the United States to attend the John Felice Rome Center. 

For Fall 2009 term / full-year 2009-10, one Carol T. Robbins Visiting Student Scholarship in an amount between $5,000 and $7,500 will be awarded to a visiting student .  This award will provide relief for tuition and academic charges and a portion may be used towards study trips while in Rome. 

Eligibility: Visiting student (i.e. non Loyola-Chicago) from any college or university, financial need (application on file with FAFSA) or qualification for need and acceptance to the JFRC.

Requirements: Scholarship application (PDF) with the bottom portion completed by a Financial Aid Administrator at the home institution, biographical information form (PDF), and submission of a one-page essay illustrating how you will take full advantage of your Rome Center experience.

The JFRC Alumni Class Scholarships           Awards Available for Fall 2009 / Full-Year 2009-2010 / Spring 2010

To continue the legacy and transformational opportunities of the JFRC for future generations, several individual JFRC classes from the Center's first thirty academic years have generously contributed to create JFRC Alumni Class Scholarships.  Recognizing the important impact a term or year at the JFRC had on their lives, through the Alumni Class Scholarships the JFRC alumni are proud to help provide students with the opportunity from which they themselves so greatly benefited. 

Scholarships are available primarily for students applying for either Fall semester or full-year study; one or more scholarships may be available for study during the Spring term.  Awards range from approximately $1,000 to $5,000 and are determined by need.  This award will provide relief for tuition and related academic charges.

Many thanks to all the JFRC alumni who make these scholarships possible. Special thanks for the inaugural awards of Fall 2008 go to the alumni classes of 1965-66, 1966-67, 1968-69, 1975-76, 1976-77.
