Student Handbook - Housing

Residence Halls

The Rome Center supports an atmosphere in the residence halls which balances academic pursuit with social attitudes. Experience has shown that the success of this policy depends upon a spirit of cooperation and understanding among all members of the Rome Center community.

All students are housed in the residence area of the building unless they have specific written permission from the Associate Director of Student Life to live off-campus. This permission will be granted only to students who wish to live with immediate family in Rome.

There is one exception to mandatory on-campus living: Rome Center residence halls cannot accommodate those students who will be accompanied by a spouse and/or children. It is the responsibility of such students to procure their own housing and to arrange for the schooling of their children.

Move-In Date: Students may not move into their rooms on campus until the specified group arrival date each semester. If students are travelling independently and arrive in Rome earlier than the official move-in date, they must themselves arrange their own accommodations elsewhere until they are allowed on campus.

Move-Out Date: Students who have completed the Fall semester and are not returning for the Spring semester are asked to vacate their quarters within 24 hours after the completion of the final examination period. Students may not store luggage at the Rome Center if they are travelling for a brief period of time before returning to the States. There are lockers for storage at the train station and the airport if students do not wish to travel with their belongings.

Full-year students may stay at the Rome Center between semesters, though they should know that the heat is turned down, hot water is at a minimum, and no food service is available. At the end of the second semester, all students must vacate the Rome Center within 24 hours after the completion of the final examination period. Students may not store luggage at the Rome Center while travelling after the semester. There are storage lockers available for rent at the train station and the airport.

Guest Policy

The right of a student to live in reasonable privacy takes precedence over the desire of his or her roommate to entertain another student in their room. In the practical application of determining when guests should be invited to the room, common sense and mutual respect should prevail.

Non-resident guests must register at the porter's desk in the presence of their host, and they must be accompanied by their host at all times while they are on campus. Guests are permitted only in the reception area and in Rinaldo's Bar. They are not allowed in other areas, including the dormitory, the computer labs, or the library. Students who wish to show visiting family members their room must first obtain permission from an SLA before bring them into the dormitory area. No guests may be on campus after 11:00 p.m.

Only individuals on official business with the Rome Center are permitted to stay on campus overnight by prior arrangement with the administration. See the list of moderately-priced lodging options to find housing for others who may wish to stay near the Rome Center.

These policies will be applied without exception, in the interests of the safety and security of the Rome Center campus. A €150 fine will be charged to any student improperly harboring a guest. The fine must be paid to the Rome Center's Business Office within 24 hours of the violation. In the event the violation occurs during the weekend, the fine must be paid in full no later than 3:30 p.m. on the following Monday.

Standard sanctions for violations of the guest policy may include a fine and/or probation.

Room Application and Contract

Accepted students who have confirmed with a deposit their intent to attend the Rome Center receive the Room Application and Contract. Occupancy of a student's room at the Rome Center is subject to the provisions of this contract. A copy of this contract, which is to be signed by students and their parents or guardians, will be kept on file in the Dean of Students' Office in Rome. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF ALL ROME CENTER STUDENTS TO FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH THE TERMS OF THE CONTRACT.

Room Assignments

Specific room and roommate requests should be recorded on the Room Application and Contract and returned to the Rome Center's Chicago office by the date specified on the document checklist. All room assignments are made in Rome; special requests should be directed to the Associate Director of Student Life at the Rome Center in Rome. Specific preferences will be honored whenever possible. Roommate requests must be mutual.

Room assignments will not be made until the week prior to the group flight departure; students will be informed of their room assignments when they arrive in Rome on Thursday, August 28, 2008 or Thursday, January 8, 2009, and not beforehand.

The Chicago office of the Rome Center is not given this information and cannot answer any questions about room and/or roommate assignments!
