Charles T. O’Reilly
May 30, 1921 - April 15, 2008
In all of the last six decades, Dr. Charles T. O'Reilly has touched our School of Social Work.
He received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University Chicago in 1942, and a Master's in Social Work in 1948. He served the School of Social Work as a faculty member in 1950's and early 1960's, and as dean from 1976-1992. There are so many areas of our school that Dr. O' Reilly helped to develop during his tenure as dean. Three significant areas included the tremendous growth of our entire social work program, the establishment of international social work relationships/partnerships, and the creation of the doctoral program. After his retirement, he continued to be actively involved in many different social issues and writing/publishing books. His spirit and commitment to the social work profession will continue to live on in the students and faculty members following in his footsteps.
To honor Dr. O'Reilly and his service to our school, we invite alumni and friends to gather at Loyola's Water Tower Campus on Friday, September 19 for a memorial service and luncheon. The service, celebrated by former university president, The Reverend Raymond J. Baumhart, SJ., will begin at 11 a.m. in Beane Hall on the 13th floor of Lewis Towers, and it is followed by a luncheon at noon in the same room. To make a reservation for the service and/or luncheon, please contact Wendy in the SSW office at 312-915-7016 or wbednarz@luc.edu.
The School is compiling, for the O'Reilly family, a collection of favorite memories of Dr. O'Reilly. To review all of the reflections, or share your own memories, please click here.
The Charles T. O'Reilly Fund has been established with gifts from friends and family to support the students and faculty of Loyola's School of Social Work. Please click here to make a memorial gift on line at www.alumni.luc.edu/sswgiving.
