Alicante is the second largest city in the Valencia region. It boasts a population of 350,000 inhabitants with the fourth strongest provincial economy of Spain.
Alicante enjoys hot summers and the sunniest and warmest winters in all of Europe. The average year-round temperature is 67 degrees with over 3,000 hours of sun annually. Alicante's sandy beaches and rocky coves can be enjoyed throughout the year. Available water sports include swimming, windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling and SCUBA diving. Entertainment and nightlife is rich and extensive in Alicante. The Old Quarter of town , El Barrio, is overflowing with popular cafes set amongst traditional architecture of Spain. The city hosts different festivals almost every month of the year.
The history of Alicante reaches back to an ancient Iberian civilization dating from the late 5th century B.C. Both the Greeks and the Romans established settlements in Alicante as well. It has been a Spanish city for over 500 years, with a charter granted to it by Ferdinand the Catholic in 1490.
