Program Focus - The IES program in Barcelona is directed primarily at students with beginning or intermediate levels of Spanish language, although there are also options for advanced students who are interested in improving their Spanish in a European environment. Barcelona, arguably Spain.s most European city and an important European commercial and cultural center, is an excellent place for students to learn about modern Spain and about the larger world of the European Union.
The City of Barcelona
Barcelona, capital of the autonomous province of Catalonia, is one of the most prosperous areas in contemporary Spain. A major cultural center since the Middle Ages, it styles itself Caralan, Spanish, European, and international. Barcelona has been home to prominent 20th century artists like Pablo Picasso and Joan Mirahe experimental works of the modernist architext Antoni Gaudare one fo the city's unique attractions, and his Church of the Holy Family is the familiar symbol of the city.
University Studies at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF)
IES works with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. The Universitat was founded by the Catalonian government in 1990 and is named after the scholar who established the structure and form of the modern Catalan language. Universitat Pompeu Fabra enrolls about 7,200 students. Since its foundation, the Universitat has become one of Spain.s leading and most selective universities. Courses are taught in Spanish, English or Catalan.

Course Information - Students normally take a combination of IES and Universitat Pompeu Fabra courses. All students are required to take a language course as part of the curriculum. Students must carry 15-19 semester credit hours (5-6 courses).
IES Courses - These courses offered at the IES Center are worth 3 semester credit hours unless otherwise specified. All IES area studies courses are taught in English and they are all available in both the fall and spring. They are offered in the following areas:

Universitat Pompeu Fabra Courses - IES students can take any course offered by UPF in Castilian Spanish or in English. Humanities courses generally are taught in Spanish or Catalan. UPF offers courses in the following areas:

School of International Trade, ESCI - ESCI is a private business school associated with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and supported by several institutions and companies in Spain. ESCI was created by the Catalan Government in 1993 with the objective of training expert professionals for international business. ESCI offers two programs to IES students:

Hispanic Studies (Estudios Hispanicos) - UPF has a Hispanic Studies program designed especially for foreign students who are studying the Spanish language and culture at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Courses are taught in Spanish. For additional information on available classes, visit www.upf.es.
Types of Accommodation
Home Stay - Students living in a Spanish home live with their host family and take two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) with the family while the IES Barcelona program is in session. Normally, two IES students will live with a family; sometimes they will share a double room or, if available, they each will have a single room.
Student Apartments - Students in apartments receive catered breakfast on weekdays and restaurant vouchers for five meals weekly.
Colegio Mayor - Students in the colegio mayor receive three meals daily in the colegio's dining hall. The Colegio Mayor has extensive computer facilities, a small workout room, and programs of activities that help IES students integrate into Spanish student life. A limited number of places are available in the Colegio Mayor, which requires a 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0).
Independent Housing - Students who have lived abroad or who have friends or family in Spain may wish to arrange their own housing. However, IES strongly encourages students to participate in housing located by IES and accepts no responsibility for other arrangements. Upon acceptance, students who elect to arrange their own housing must notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.
Program Costs and Financial Aid Transfer
IES tuition ($13,210 for Fall 2008), plus IES room and board costs ($2,590 for Fall 2008), and IES health insurance ($195 for Fall 2008).
The following forms of aid may transfer: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal PLUS Loans, IL Monetary Award Program Grant (MAP), Alternative Loans, IES scholarships and need-based grants (for which students must apply).
For Summer Programs:
IES tuition ($4725 for summer 2008), plus IES room and board costs ($1,190for summer 2008) and IES health insurance ($80 for summer 2008)
