Program Types

All students are required to take German each semester in addition to the mandatory intensive German instruction during orientation.

IES Courses- Student can enroll in a German language course and four IES area studies courses for a full semester course load

IES and University Courses- Students must enroll in a four credit German language course but may take a portion or all of their other courses at Humboldt-University Berlin.

Humboldt-University Berlin and other Universities in Berlin

IES Berlin is organized in cooperation with the highly renowned Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin. Approximately 12% of the University's 37,00 students are from foreign countries. The University offers a wide variety of courses in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences.

Under special circumstances, placement also can be arranged at other universities in Berlin, depending on student qualifications, available space, and scheduling. Institutions where special placements may be made include: Technische Universit䴠Berlin, the Freie Universit䴬 the Universit䴠der K? the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee, the Hochschule f?auspielkunst "Ernst Busch," and the Hochschule f?ik "Hans Eisler."

Course Information

IES course offerings - IES offers a number of courses at its center in Berlin. All courses are taught in German. IES courses have characteristics of both U.S. and European university courses, without being identical to either. IES courses require a midterm evaluation and final exam, as well as oral presentations and/or written term papers, and have syllabi with required and recommended readings. Credits and Course Load - Students must carry 15 to 19 semester credit hours. Students enroll in a 4-credit German course and four IES area studies courses or the equivalent in university courses for a total of 15 to 19 semester credits. Most IES Center courses are worth 3 credits unless otherwise noted. Direct enrolled university courses are awarded from 2 to 6 credits depending on the number of contact hours and work requirements.

Types of Accommodation

IES Housing - IES Berlin locates comfortable housing, which reflects typical student accommodations in the city. Students are offered accommodations in homes and apartments with Germans throughout the city. Generally, meals are not included in the housing arrangements and are not prepaid in the program fee. Students normally prepare their own breakfast and dinner at their apartment. On weekdays, an inexpensive lunch can be taken at university cafeterias.

Independent Housing - Students who have lived abroad before, or who have friends or family in Berlin, may wish to arrange their own housing. However, IES strongly encourages students to participate in housing located by IES and accepts no responsibility for other arrangements. Upon located by IES and accepts no responsibility for other arrangements. Upon acceptance, students who elect to arrange their own housing must notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.

Full-year students who plan independent housing during the second semester must notify the Berlin staff prior to November 1st. If timely notification is received, students will be eligible to have a housing allocation deducted from their program fee. If notification is received after the deadline, no deduction will be given.

Program Costs and Financial Aid Transfer

IES tuition ($14,000 for Fall 2008), plus IES room and board costs ($3,085 for Fall 2008), and IES health insurance ($195 for Fall 2008).

The following forms of aid may transfer: Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal PLUS Loans, IL Monetary Award Program Grant (MAP), Alternative Loans, IES scholarships and need-based grants (for which students must apply).

For Summer Programs:

Students pay IES tuition ($4,725 for summer 2008). Room and board ($1,190 for summer 2008) health insurance ($80 for summer 2008), airfare and other miscellaneous expenses are not included in the tuition. Check with a study abroad advisor and a financial aid advisor for information about financial aid transfer.
