Program Focus - Founded in 1991, the IES Salamanca program quickly developed a strong academic reputation based on its challenging curriculum and solid ties to the Universidad de Salamanca. IES courses in Art History, Economics, History, Spanish Language and Literature, Political Science, Religion, and Sociology focus on Spanish language and Iberian culture, comparative studies of the Mediterranean basin, and comparative studies of Spain and Latin America. Improving students' written and oral proficiency in Castilian Spanish is a major focus of the program; both the language and area studies courses are designed to build on the language skills that students already possess. Language courses are required and are offered at intermediate and advanced levels. All courses are taught in Spanish by faculty at the Universidad de Salamanca.

The City of Salamanca - Situated on the northwestern corner of the beautiful Castilian plain not far from the border of Portugal, Salamanca proudly identifies itself as the home of one of Europe's premiere universities. The Universidad de Salamanca, nicknamed the "Oxford of the Spanish World," opened in 1218. Since then Salamanca has welcomed students from Spain and all parts of the world; it enrolls a resident student population of 32,000 and an additional 6,000 international students.
The combination of a large, famous university in a small, hospitable city makes Salamanca the ideal place to live and study Spanish language and culture. The IES Center is located in the center of the city, just steps from the Plaza Mayor and a five-minute walk from the "historic" campus of the Universidad de Salamanca. Tours of historical sites, attendance at theater, opera, and cinema, and informal dinner parties are some of the ways students' academic experiences are enriched.
Course Information - Students must enroll in a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester and may enroll in a maximum of 19 credit hours, including IES and university courses.

Types of Accommodation
Home Stays - IES locates housing in Spanish homes with señoras or families. All accommodations are screened and approved by the Universidad de Salamanca staff and IES staff to ensure acceptable standards of comfort. Students live with their hosts and take all of their meals with them while the IES Salamanca program is in session. On occasion, more than one IES student may live with a family.
Student Residence Hall (for full year students only) - In the residence hall, Residencia Cuenca, all rooms are singles with bath and kitchenette; with this option, one meal per day is provided in the nearby dining hall. All admitted students must complete a housing questionnaire where they can list their preferences or special needs.
Independent Housing - Students who have lived abroad before or who have friends or family in Salamanca may wish to arrange their own housing. However, IES strongly encourages students to participate in housing located by IES and accepts no responsibility for other arrangements. Upon acceptance, students who elect to arrange their own housing must notify the IES Chicago office no later than the deadline listed on the Independent Housing Form for their program.
