The City of Luneburg - Luneburg, a city of 80,000 inhabitants in the German state of Niedersachen, is located 30 miles south of Hamburg, a thriving seaport of 1.8 million on an inlet to the North Sea. Only 25 minutes away from Hamburg by train, Luneburg offers USAC students the quality of life of a smaller community without sacrificing the cultural resources and activities of a large metropolitan city. Furthermore, Luneburg is only 30 minutes away form the former East Germany, providing a unique vantage point from which to study the dynamics of reunification. It is on of the few German cities that were not destroyed in the last war and offers an extraordinary opportunity to live in the beauty and history of a city dating back more than a thousand years. Luneburg has built a reputation as a resort destination. Besides a large salt water swimming pool with artificial waves, it offers excellent examples of north German Gothic brick architecture, the 13th-14th century church of St. John, a beautiful medieval and Renaissance main square, a monastery founded in 1172, and other historical treasures too numerous to mention.
