The Country of Malta - Malta and its sister islands Gozo and Comino occupy a total surface area of 120 square miles. Malta, the largest island, is 19 miles long and 9 miles wide. Its geographically strategic location at the center of the Mediterranean has attracted the attention of the world.s maritime powers, as control over Malta was necessary to ensure control over shipping in the Mediterranean. The national language is Maltese which is a complex derivative of Semitic and Romance languages using a primarily Latin alphabet but also including a number of additional letters which originate in the Arab language. English is also an official language due to British rule, which lasted 160 years. In 1964, Malta obtained its political independence from Britain and in 1974 it became a Republic. The climate is typically Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers. Malta has a population of 380,00 and is visited annually by over one million tourists. Msida, is located about 4 miles outside the capital city of Valletta. Located on a peninsula, Valletta boasts two excellent harbors, fine museums and a 16th century castle.
