Types of Programs Offered

Exchange Programs

Loyola's ten reciprocal exchange programs in seven countries (France, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Mexico, South Africa and Spain) offer cost-effective opportunities for students who are willing to accept the challenges of a highly independent study abroad program. Students will be directly enrolled in the exchange partner university. Courses will be taught in the local language except for the Japan, Korea and Lille-Nice programs. Students have the opportunity to receive Loyola credits and grades for courses taken during the exchange.

Loyola students will be expected to have the same responsibilities as local students and will need to make a number of arrangements on their own or directly with the partner university. The Office for International Programs will offer assistance whenever possible.

One advantage of these programs is that students may retain all their financial aid while abroad because all financial aid, except for work-study, applies to these programs, including Loyola funded grants and scholarships. Another advantage is the wonderful opportunity they provide for immersion in the culture, community and country of the partner university. Students from each of the exchange partner institutions regularly study at Loyola, so it is possible to get to know about the host university before leaving Chicago.

University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) Programs

Loyola is an Associate member of the University Studies Abroad Consortium (www.usac.unr.edu), which is a group of universities in the US and abroad offering programs in over 20 different countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and Latin America. Students have the opportunity to receive Loyola credits and grades while attending USAC programs. Most of these programs are very cost effective for Loyola students. At some sites there is a focus on studying a foreign language, while at others students enroll in a full range of courses taught in English. The USAC programs in Turin and Viterbo, Italy; Chengdu and Shanghai, China; and Santiago, Chile are not available to LUC students.

Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) Programs

Loyola has recently become a member of IES (The Institute for the International Education of Students). (www.IESabroad.org), which is comprised of a consortium of U.S. universities offering study abroad programs in over 20 different cities throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and South America. Students have the opportunity to receive Loyola credits and grades while attending IES programs. IES awards students from all over the U.S. over $1 million in scholarships and financial aid each year. The IES programs in Milan, Rome, Siena, Beijing, Shanghai and Santiago are not available to LUC students. For more information, see Financial Information.

The John Felice Rome Center

Loyola's John Felice Rome Center in Italy is an actual campus of Loyola University Chicago, offering an American campus experience transplanted to a European setting, situated in the heart of Western culture and civilization. Students enroll in Loyola classes taught by Loyola faculty as well as European faculty; all classes are taught in English except for Italian language classes. The Rome Center annually enrolls more than 350 students who come from more than 40 different universities.

The Beijing Center

Loyola offers its own program through The Beijing Center, a Jesuit-operated institution that utilizes the modern facilities and well-equipped classroom buildings of China's University of International Business and Economics. Classes are taught in English by professors from Chinese universities, with a curricular focus on Chinese language and culture as well as international business. The Beijing Center enrolls 50 - 100 students per semester who are primarily from Jesuit colleges and universities across the U.S.

Affiliate Programs

Loyola has affiliations with two Jesuit-operated institutions: La Universidad Alberto Hurtado in Santiago, Chile, and Casa de la Solidaridad, a program offered through Santa Clara University in San Salvador, El Salvador. Approximately 10-15 Loyola students normally attend the Santiago, Chile program. On the other hand, the Casa de la Solidaridad program enrolls a number of students from various Jesuit universities. Students have the opportunity to receive Loyola credits and grades while attending affiliate programs.

Loyola School and Department Programs

The academic program that you are enrolled in may offer its own special study abroad programs that are relevant to your field of studies. Below is a partial listing of such programs; it is not exhaustive and is subject to change. We encourage you to check with your own academic department for up-to-date study abroad program offerings.

College of Arts & Sciences
The Biology Department offers a 3-credit course during Spring semester called Natural Resource Conservation (Biology 393) which includes a study trip to Costa Rica during spring break. The course allows students to focus on environmental problems and applied principles of ecology and conservation in one of the most diverse biomes on earth--the tropical rain forest. Students do not necessarily need to be biology majors in order to participate in this course, but need to obtain the instructor's permission to enroll. School of Business Administration
SBA offers two-week intensive summer graduate and undergraduate courses in a variety of locations. Destinations in the past few years have included Rome, Athens, Seoul and Bangkok. School of Education
Two-week sessions are offered during the summer at Loyola's Rome Center in which students can take education courses linked to the Rome setting. For more information, see Study in Rome 2007.

The Graduate School

Law School

Niehoff School of Nursing
Loyola's nursing school has offered annual study abroad programs for its students at the Rome Center as well as in England and Belize. For more information, see International Opportunities through the Niehoff School of Nursing.

University Ministry
Ministry offers a variety of international immersion trips through their Alternative Break program. Destinations include such places as El Salvador, Mexico, and Guatemala. Alternative Break Immersions.

School of Social Work
The School of Social Work has offered a summer program comprising of a graduate level course and field activity at Loyola's Rome Center during two weeks in July. For more information, see the Social Work study abroad page.
