News from the Archives: 2008
November
Things have been very busy this fall at the WLA, especially so as we come to the end of the semester. The theme for this month has been "outreach, outreach, outreach!"
On November 7th I traveled to Dubuque, IA, where I gave a presentation at the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) at the 20th anniversary of their Heritage Society. Very well attended, the talk highlighted the legacy of the BVMs at Mundelein College and how important their records are as the foundation for the Women & Leadership Archives. I remain now, as then, extremely honored for the invitation and opportunity to speak. Not coincidentally, I would like to take the time to promote the new BVM website, recently redesigned! Please check it out, as well as their promotional postcard.
Also this Novemeber, the WLA participted in a joint Chicago Area Archivists and Chicago Area Special Collections Librarians meeting on the 20th. Held on the 4th floor of the Information Commons, the short program was concluded by facility tours of the IC by Dean Robert Seal, the University Archies by Kathy Young, and the Women & Leadership Archives by Beth Myers.

Join the WLA in celebrating National Archives Month!
The WLA marked the occasion by participating in several outreach projects. The first, held on October 11th, was the "Preserving and Sharing the Resources" meeting sponsored by the Chicago Area Women's History Council. Attended by over 100 people at the Newberry Library, this was the second major public program of the Documenting the Women's Movement in Chicago, 1960s-1980s Project. The WLA was one of eight archives that met with potential donors in hopes of connecting the right insitution with the right repository. The long term goal remains the collection and preservation of women's movement records and the WLA gladly joins in that process!
The second event, held on October 23rd, was the official launch of the 2008-2009 Chicago Metro History Fair also at the Newberry Library. The WLA was one of a dozen or so archives that met with teachers interested in inspiring their students to join the History Fair competition. According to their website, " The history fair serves 20,000 students and 500 teachers in 200 area schools who participate in school, regional, state, and national history contests."

Welcome to the new Women & Leadership Archives webpage! From this new site, visitors will be able to access all of the information previously available plus many new and exciting additions. The resdesign of the website was largely due to user demand and it is intended to be easier to find, navigate, and access information about our collections. The approach to the website is one of fluidity--the site will always be evolving and improving. Already we have been workind hard on several forthcoming additions such as the Interactive Mundelein College Timeline and the lauching of several new digital exhibits including "Mundelein College Pheonix Class of the Year" and "Did You Know? A Spotlight on WLA Collections." Keep a look out for these in the very near future!
We hope to hear from you about these changes and any suggestions for new features. Please email emyers@luc.edu with your ideas!
A special thanks as well to Information Techonology Services for so much hard work in upgrading the WLA page!
