About Us
Each year, the Women's Studies and Gender Studies Program chooses a theme around which it structures its major speakers and supporting events. For the 2008-2009 academic year, we will be exploring issues related to the theme of "Global Perspectives on Gender and Human Rights." Some Fall events related to this topic include Madhu Kishwar's presentation of "The Potential and Limitations of Law as an Instrument for Strengthening Women's Rights: Some Examples from India" and the African Women in America Conference featuring Immaculee Ilibagiza.
Women's Studies and Gender Studies programming is not limited to this theme, however, and we are hosting as well as co-sponsoring a number of other events on campus this Fall. Please consult our event calendar for more information. The staff of the Women's Studies Program includes our Director, Dr. Betsy Jones Hemenway, a professor in the History Department; our Graduate Program Director is Dr. Prudence Moylan, from the History Department; and this year our Graduate Assistant is Jacqui Scott, who is working on her MA in Women's Studies and Masters in Social Work. We are working together to offer a wide range of classes in Women's Studies and Gender Studies for both our undergraduates and Master's level students, and to help foster discussion across campus on issues relating to gender and equality.
